Mac Apps To Install When Switching From Windows

Travis Avatar

If you are a Windows user, using a Mac can be a difficult transition. From the small things such as copying and pasting to other more annoying tasks such as alt+tab not working as expected which all make the transition even worse. Here is my lists of free only apps that I use that might make the transitation a little bit easier.

Rectangle (Window Snapping)

Allows Window Snapping like in Windows. You can also set the shortcuts so you can essentialy do the Windows Key + Arrow key shortcuts.

CopyClip (Clipboard History)

Mac for some reason doesn’t have Clipboard History. This allows Clipboard History, at least for text. Sorry, you can’t have picture clipboard history.

UnnaturalScrollWheels (Reverse The Trackpad/Mouse Scroll Wheel)

For some reason, Apple decided that the scroll wheel on a mouse and the scrolling on a track pad must be the same and cannot be changed. For example, when scrolling on a trackpad, when I move my fingers towards the “up” direction, I expect the screen to scroll down. This would be an “invesre” beahvior, but is normal behavior as if you were using a phone. However, if you prefer this scroll direction, a regular mouse with a scroll wheel will also be the inverse direction. In other words, if you scroll “up” or “forwards”, you will scroll down (instead of up) as you most likely expect. This app fixes that and allows you to scroll in the opposite direction.

The Unarchiver

7zip alternative.

Caffine

Keeps the screen from sleeping. Yes you can alter this in your settings, but then it doesn’t necarrsily mean your screen will sleep if you lock your screen.

Pock

You can change the touch bar to show your Dock. If you have a touch bar, this could be useful as your dock cannot be on more than one screen (why?). I used to use this, but it became too annoying and I just had to get used to having my dock on one screen. Sharing in the event you are interested.

EqMac

Allows you to use volume controls when another device doesn’t support it… doesn’t work well. I wish there was a free app to adjust volume levels on a per app basis.

Alt-Tab

Alt-Tab like a Windows Machine. For some reason, Apple decides that the behavior of “Command+Tab” should be to switch between apps, rather than each Window in an app. For example, if you have multiple Browser tabs open, Command+Tab can’t switch between them. And no, you can’t fix that without an addon like this. However, if you for some reason prefer the default behavior, it will allow you to put it on “Command+`”.

Dock Expose

Another annoying feature on Mac is when you click on an App in the Dock, it will open all instances of that app, even on other monitors. Have more than one web browser window open? Well, I hope you went every single one of them in view. This allows hovering over the taskbar to preview all the apps

Windows Shortcuts

  • Home and End: Either Command+Left Arrow/Right Arrow OR Fn+Left Arrow or Right Arrow
  • Delete (delete chararacter to right): Fn+Delete
  • Screenshot: Shift-Command-3 (Takes picture of screen) and Shift-Command-4 (takes picture of a portion). If you combine either of these shortcuts with Control, the screenshot will be on your clipboard.

I’m sure there are more apps that can also aid in the transition. These are the ones that I found helpful! Hopefully this was a little bit helpful to at least one person out there.
